Curtiss-Wright Controls Introduces High-Density Computing (HDC) Development System

1 year 5 months ago → New Products

SAN DIEGO, CA – August 31, 2010 -- Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, VXS and CompactPCI products for the rugged deployed defense and aerospace market, has introduced a new family of High-Density Computing (HDC) development systems designed to speed the design of high performance, multi-node open standards-based processor systems. These highly engineered air-cooled lab systems quickly provide system integrators with functioning hardware that speed and simplify the development of software and benchmark testing to significantly reduce time-to-deployment.

CWCEC’s Embedded Systems group models the HDC Development Systems as closely as possible to the customer’s tactical deployment hardware. The HDC systems are integrated with multi-node processing modules such as CWCEC’s CHAMP family of DSP engines and supported with CWCEC single board computers (SBCs) and network engines. HDC development systems house the same board content as deployed units only in open lab chassis to provide engineers ready access to the modules during the system development phase.

“Our customers are deploying larger and higher performance systems than ever,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “The HDC Development System gives them the platform to speed their development phase, resulting in proven, qualified multi-node systems that meet their unique application requirements.”

HDC Development System Key Features:

· 6U VPX form factor

· Desktop lab chassis

- Supports up to 12 modules with 1” pitch

- Up to 2000 W power supply

- 3x high-performance 130 CFM cooling fans

- Open chassis style supports engineering access for debugging

· Dimensions

- Width: 19”

- Height: 21”

- Depth: 13”

· Optional module content*

- VPX6-185 – Dual Core Freescale™ SBC

- CHAMP AV6 – Quad PowerPC® Architecture DSP module

- VPX6-684 Fireblade – Gigabit Ethernet Switch module

- FX2 – FPGA module

- I/O module for program requirements

*Intel-based modules also available

Example of a Typical HDC Configuration

Each HDC Development System is individually configured to match the specific tactical deployment hardware required by a customer. The following example illustrates a typical system configuration.

· Three (3) VPX6-185 SBCs

· Six (6) CHAMP-AV6 DSP modules

· Three (3) XF05F Fibre Channel modules

· One (1) VPX6-684 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Switch

· Rear Transition Modules (RTMs) & I/O break-out cables for each processing card

This HDC system configuration, the HDC-DEV-0001, results in a system comprising 27 processors with 54 CPU cores. The system transmits data over a Serial RapidIO® (SRIO) fabric, at data rates up to 80 Gbps. The entire processor cluster is also connected via a GbE network enabled by the VPX6-684 Switch module, which provides an external Ethernet connection for system management such as Built-in Test (BIT) execution and application loading.

HDC Software Support

In addition to the high-performance HDC hardware offering, CWCEC also provides a complete set of system software solutions, including CWCEC Continuum IPC for interprocessor communication and a host of system management tools such as System Monitoring, Event Analysis, Fabric Manager and Multi-node Debugger.
