Themis Computer Announces the Industry's First UltraSPARC(r) T2-Based Board to Utilize VITA-46 (VPX) and VITA-65 Backplane Standards

9 months 22 hours ago → New Products

FREMONT, California – December 2, 2009 - Themis Computer announces its new T2VPX high-performance, 6U VPX board computer. The T2VPX is the first member of the company’s new family of VITA-46 compliant, board-level-computers. Themis’ T2VPX supports the VITA-46 and VITA-65 standards, providing customers with next generation processing performance and high bandwidth serial switched fabrics.

The T2VPX board is the industry’s first 6U board level computer based on the Sun Microsystems™ multi-core UltraSPARC T2® processor, continuing Themis’ legacy of bringing high performance Solaris™ Operating System to demanding applications. Themis’ T2VPX features a new system architecture that combines up to eight processor cores and 64 threads, with a VPX IO fabric. The T2VPX is ideal for compute-intensive Military and aerospace applications requiring rugged computing solutions, beyond the reach of today’s VME-64-based systems.

The T2VPX is based on the Sun UltraSPARC® T2 CMT (chip multi-threading) processor, the industry’s first “system on a chip” and runs both Linux and the Solaris™ 10 Operating System. Themis’ new T2VPX board further proliferates Sun's advanced UltraSPARC T2 processor technologies into embedded computing markets. The T2VPX will be offered with 6 and 8 core processor options.

"Our T2VPX’s UltraSPARC T2 processor, combined with the VPX standard’s high performance serial IO, brings users unprecedented processing power and throughput," said William Kehret, president of Themis Computer. "The T2VPX differentiates itself, with up to eight cores and tight integration with the Solaris and Linux Operating Systems. Themis’ T2VPX is the first of a new series of VPX boards, featuring industry leading scalability and performance,” Mr. Kehret added.

“VPX is a proposed ANSI standard that breaks the performance bonds of traditional buses and serial interconnects, enabling Themis to create supercomputer-level products like this one for the critical embedded systems market”, declares Ray Alderman, executive director of VITA. “The support of global embedded vendors like Themis will bring the advantages of VPX to a wide range of vertical markets and establish its position as a leading edge technology with a long term technology cycle.”

T2VPX features and specifications include:

• UltraSPARC T2 processor with up to 8 cores at 1.2 GHz

• Includes CPU independent Board Management Controller (Service Processor Module)

• Up to 32GB Fully Buffered DDR2 memory with ECC protection

• Built-in Hypervisor with LDOM support
