Curtiss-Wright Controls Congratulates VITA on the Successful Ratification of ANSI/VITA 65-2010

1 year 7 months ago → Industry News

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 17, 2010 -- Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, VXS and CompactPCI products for the rugged deployed defense and aerospace market, congratulates the VME International Trade Association (VITA), the trade association dedicated to fostering American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited open system architectures in critical embedded system applications, for completing the successful ratification by ANSI of the OpenVPX™ System Specification under ANSI/VITA 65.0-2010.

OpenVPX is the architectural framework that defines system-level VPX interoperability for multivendor, multimodule, integrated system environments. The successfull industry effort that has led to the ratification of the OpenVPX specification comprised the contributions and cooperation of many people, representing both embedded computing vendors and prime contractors, who provided their time and energies tirelessly over the preceding 18 months. Curtiss-Wright Controls is especially proud of its contribution to this effort, including the participation of Pete Jha, Senior Software Engineer, who serves as the Chair of the VITA 65 Working Group and Mark Littlefield, Chatsworth Director and Site Manager, who chaired the OpenVPX effort and oversaw its successful delivery to VITA.

"Curtiss-Wright Controls is proud of its participation in the open standards process that resulted in the ANSI ratification of VITA 65," said Lynn Bamford, Vice President and General Manager, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. "As a leading supplier of boards and systems designed to be compliant with OpenVPX, and the first board vendor to publicly demonstrate a working OpenVPX system, we've been very pleased to see the rapid rate at which the rugged deployed aerospace and defense COTS market has embraced VPX as the board architecture of choice for demanding high performance embedded computing. Now, the OpenVPX System Specification promises to further speed the growth and adoption of VPX technology and solutions."

Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing is proud of the leadership position it took in the development of the VPX and OpenVPX specifications. The company’s VPX6-185 was the industry's first VPX SBC, and the CHAMP-AV6 was the industry’s first 6U VPX DSP engine. Curtiss-Wright was also the first to publically demonstrate a working VPX system and a working OpenVPX system.

OpenVPX defines the VPX Systems Specification, which manages and constrains module and backplane designs, and provides integrators with defined profiles from which to build systems. The VPX Systems Specification includes the definition of pin-outs and sets interoperability points within VPX while maintaining full compliance with the existing VPX specification. VPX, with its far greater bandwidth and support for distributed computing, has rapidly emerged as the VME of the 21st Century. The VPX and OpenVPX standard enable Curtiss-Wright Controls to provide the aerospace and defense market with far larger and more powerful system solutions, based on our SBC and signal processor engine technologies.
