LEESBURG, VA – June 30, 2009, -- Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX and CompactPCI products for the aerospace and defense market, has introduced the VPX6-187, its first single board computer based on Freescale's latest eight-core QorIQ™ P4080 Communications Processor. This rugged, high performance 6U VPX general purpose SBC supports its eight 1.5 GHz Power Architecture™ processor cores with high-performance datapath acceleration logic, network and peripheral bus interfaces. The VPX6-187 is designed to leverage the flexibility and rich feature set of the QorIQ P4080 processor to provide a trusted computing environment in harsh Military and aerospace applications.

“We are excited to introduce our next generation VPX general purpose computer that makes use of Freescale’s latest Power Architecture SoC,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager, Modular Solutions, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “The VPX6-187 will be the first of a series of products to employ Freescale’s QorIQ P4080. It will provide our customers with unprecedented computing power and performance per watt to take embedded multicore processing to an entirely new level.”

Offered in both air-and conduction-cooled rugged configurations, the VPX6-187 is also optionally available in a VPX-REDI (VITA 48) configuration to support applications that requiring Line-Replaceable Modules (LRMs). VPX-REDI provides enhanced hardware protection including front and rear metal covers to support in-the-field maintenance and replacement.

The VPX6-187’s high-speed VPX Backplane supports connectivity via Gen 2 PCIe and SRIO for multi-GB/sec board-to-board data communications. The VPX6-187 also supports a rich I/O complement including (4) four Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports, USB, options for multi-function RS-232/422/485 serial ports, MIL-STD-1553, Serial ATA, and TTL and differential discrete I/O to provide connectivity integration with other system elements independent of its two (2) PMC/XMC sites. The board’s dual mezzanine sites are ideal for the acquisition, processing, and distribution of high-speed sensor data such as Video, Radar, and sonar.

By providing support for data, control and expansion plane interconnects, the VPX6-187 can be used in centralized, distributed, or hybrid switched backplane topologies. Curtiss-Wright Controls, as a steering committee member of OpenVPX, and a leading participant in the VITA 65 Working Group, is committed to ensuring that its VPX products will adhere and comply with advances in this critical open standard.

VPX6-187 Features:

• Freescale QorIQ P4080

• 8 E500MC Cores running at 1.5 GHz

• Up to 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM controlled by dual 64-bit controllers

• Dual Mezzanine XMC/PMC Sites

• Full complement of I/O capability (Ethernet, SCSI, serial, USB 2.0, 1553, Serial ATA, TTL and differential discrete I/O)

• VPX/VPX-REDI formats with six 4-lane fabric ports, supporting Serial RIO and PCI Express Gen 2

• VxWorks 6.x BSP and Driver Suite supporting Workbench 3.x IDE, WindRiver Linux GPP BSP and Driver suite

• Continuum Software Architecture (CSA) firmware providing a comprehensive suite of system debug, exerciser, and update functions, BIT, and non-volatile memory sanitization function

• Designed for military/aerospace harsh-environment applications, both air- and conduction-cooled

• Pin Compatible with Curtiss-Wright Controls’ VPX6-185 SBC

Software Support

The VPX6-187 is also supported by a wealth of software including Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing’s standard CSA firmware, Wind River VxWorks and Linux Board Support Package and Driver Suites supporting both SMP and AMP operating modes, MIL-STD-1553 software driver, and other operating systems.

Pricing for the 1.5 GHz QorIQ™ P4080 Communications Processor-based VPX6-187 with 2 Gbytes of DDR3 SDRAM starts at $12,700.
