OpenVPX provides a framework for interoperability between modules and backplanes by defining a set of system specifications within VPX – known as profiles – that condense the enormous number of combinations and permutations between modules and backplane implementations. By explicitly addressing system interoperability, VPX accelerates development and deployment, reduces test time and guarantees that modules from different vendors can co-exist within a given system. Interoperability provides benefits to both suppliers and integrators: suppliers can build products to these profile definitions and claim compliance, while integrators can select products that match specific profiles of interest.

VPX and OpenVPX have wide applicability for military, aerospace, and industrial uses, including radar, multi-INT (e.g. radar data exploitation and information dissemination), image processing, avionics, homeland security, telecom and transportation.
