Software-Defined Radio (SDR) is a promising new technology in the wireless space that will enable its users to receive service and feature upgrades almost instantly. These immediate upgrades are possible because these radios are almost entirely defined in software, thus eliminating expensive hardware upgrades. SDR’s inherent flexibility must, however, be planned for in advance via hardware and software considerations, ultimately resulting in increased code portability, improved communications systems life cycles, and reduced costs via third-party COTS hardware.
